McCain assailed for opposing adoptions by gays. NEW YORK - Advocates for gay and lesbian parents are denouncing Sen. John McCain, an adoptive father himself, for opposing adoptions by gays, which prompted his presidential campaign to clarify Tuesday that he does not seek a federal ban on the practice. Only one state, Florida, outlaws adoptions by gays, which have become commonplace in much of the nation. The Republican nominee-in-waiting was asked for his views on the subject in an interview published Sunday in The New York Times. "I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption," McCain replied. "Sen. McCain's expressed his personal preference for children to be raised by a mother and a father wherever possible," the statement added. ... Father's Day Banned in Scottish Schools. Following the recent law in Britain prohibiting the use of the words mom ('mum') and dad in public schools, the politically-correct forces in Europe once again succeeded -- this time having fathers removed from their children's classrooms. According to reports coming out of Edinburgh, Scotland, children in public schools are prohibited from making Father's Day cards and related gifts as was customary in the past. The rationale given by school administrators for their action is their wish to avoid embarrassing school children who live with single mothers or lesbian partners. "All the proponents of the politically-correct orthodoxy need is to find a few activist judges and they can change the rules at will. Look at California: Teachers and administrators can no longer use the words "mom," "dad," "mother," or "father." Read term "Moms" and "Dads" now banned in California public schools. ... The Penalty for Getting Behind in Child Support. In 2006, the Tennessee legislature passed reforms to allow convicted felons to regain voting rights after serving their time. Amendments were attached specifying that voting rights could not be regained unless all criminal restitution payments and child support were current. Approximately 48% of Tennessee male prisoners are African American, and the vast majority of those of all races who are behind on child support are indigent. So the bottom line is, Tennessee has come up with yet another way to keep large numbers of African Americans and poor people from voting. The American Civil Liberties Union - initially a supporter of the reform effort sued Tennessee state and county officials in February to eliminate the provisions about child support and restitution. It represents three men who have served their time but cannot regain the right to vote because of the amendments. ... Read More: http://www.glennsacks.com/blog/index.php?tag=enewsletter070108
A Father's Tough Love. During my 1960s boyhood, Father's Day was an awkward occasion. It required my brothers and me to express love to a man who considered such talk girlish, and who knew we feared more than liked him. Only for the sake of Mom did Dad and his five boys put on a Father's Day act. But after the death of my father last month, I understand that those fake-feeling gestures back then had conveyed a lot of truth, and that the expression of love between a father and his boys can be -- maybe should be -- at times difficult. As a parent raising his family in Kansas City, Kan., Gerald Robert Helliker wasn't perfect. But unlike many of today's fathers -- including me -- he never sacrificed his principles in a bid for our approval, never tried to be cool around us. A tough guy, he expected the same from his boys, and last month he offered a final challenge: Could we -- will we -- die as bravely as he did? ... California gays launch effort to stop marriage referendum. SAN FRANCISCO - Gay activists asked California's highest court Friday to keep off the November ballot a citizens' initiative that would again ban gay marriage. Lawyers for Equality California filed a petition arguing that the proposed amendment to the California Constitution should be invalidated because its impact was not made clear to the millions of voters who signed petitions to qualify the measure before the state Supreme Court legalized same-sex unions. "This court has recognized that gay and lesbian couples have a fundamental right to marry and, as of June 16, such couples have been getting married across the state," the petition states. The petition also claims the so-called California Marriage Protection Act should be disqualified because it would revise, rather than amend, the state Constitution by altering its fundamental guarantee of equality for all - in essence writing a law the state high court has already found unconstitutional into the constitution. ... Several CA counties quit performing civil marriages. SAN DIEGO - Officials in Kern, Calaveras, and Butte counties in California have said they plan on closing their doors to performing all civil wedding ceremonies rather than be forced to "wed" same-sex couples under the state's Supreme Court ruling permitting same-sex "marriage." The counties have cited staff and budget restrictions as their main reasons for closing their doors, saying they are not equipped to handle any influx of same-sex couples looking for "weddings." Kern County Clerk Ann Barnett made the announcement after the county's legal counsel and attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund informed her office that she could not choose to marry some couples and not others without incurring a lawsuit. ... Calif. court refuses to stay homosexual marriage ruling. California's highest court Wednesday refused to stay its decision legalizing same-sex marriage in the state, clearing the final hurdle for homosexual couples to start tying the knot this month. Conservative religious and legal groups had asked the California Supreme Court to stop its May 15 order requiring state and local officials to sanction same-sex unions from becoming effective until voters have the chance to consider the issue in November. The justices' decisions typically become final after 30 days. An initiative to ban homosexual marriage has qualified for the Nov. 4 ballot. Its passage would overrule the court's decision by amending the state constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman. ... Read more: http://www.onenewsnow.com/AP/Search/US/Default.aspx?id=130776
Same Sex Marriage Threatens Religious Liberty. In theory, allowing homosexual couples to marry should not threaten anyone's religious freedom. Although the social and moral implications of gay marriage are apparent to many, few realize the significant danger posed to religious freedom by the California Supreme Court ruling in May giving gays a constitutional right to marry. The Court's decision now elevates homosexuality to the same legal status as race, a protected class. Christian schools will lose the right to discipline students for sexual misconduct with others of the same sex. The absurdity of the "equality" argument comes into sharp focus in this scenario. Consider that a Christian school could expel two heterosexual students for sexual misconduct without exposing itself to legal liability, but could not expel homosexual students for the same offense. This is what it means for gays to become a protected class. Instead of achieving equality, they achieve a superior status in society. A religious school would be able to fire a teacher for garden variety adultery, but it would be illegal to fire a gay teacher for the same offense. ... Supreme Court approves law curbing child pornography. WASHINGTON (BP)--The United States Supreme Court handed Congress a victory May 19 in its effort to combat child pornography after a previous effort fell short in the justices' eyes. The high court voted 7-2 to reverse a lower court and uphold a 2003 law that bars the promotion or solicitation of actual or ostensible child pornography through such means as mail or the Internet. Writing for the majority, Associate Justice Antonin Scalia rejected the unanimous decision of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which said the law was overly broad and vague. "There is no doubt that this prohibition falls well within constitutional bounds," Scalia wrote. ... Read more: http://www.baptistpress.com/BPnews.asp?ID=28082
Back When Divorcing Was Hard, Some States Found a Way to Profit. Before Nevada, there was Indiana -- and South Dakota, Oklahoma and Florida. All of these states figured out how to make money on other states' divorce laws. Until well into the 20th century, some states made it almost impossible for couples to divorce. In South Carolina, divorce for any reason was prohibited from 1878 to 1949. In New York, the divorce law sponsored by Alexander Hamilton in 1787 that recognized adultery as the only ground for divorce remained in force until 1967. Most states required divorcing couples to be residents for at least a year; Connecticut demanded three years. At the other end of the spectrum were states like Indiana, which, complained an editorial writer in the mid-19th century, "would untie the knot for the slightest possible reason." ... California's top court legalizes gay marriage. SAN FRANCISCOCalifornia's Supreme Court declared gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry -- a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony. Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. But the window could close soon after -- religious and social conservatives are pressing to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage. A crowd of people raised their fists in triumph inside City Hall, and people wrapped themselves in the rainbow-colored gay-pride flag outside the courthouse. ... Family breakdown costs $112 billion. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--High rates of divorce and unmarried childbearing cost U.S. taxpayers at least $112 billion each year, making marriage enrichment a legitimate policy concern, a first-of-its-kind study sponsored by four public policy and research groups said. "These costs are due to increased taxpayer expenditures for anti-poverty, criminal justice and education programs, and through lower levels of taxes paid by individuals whose adult productivity has been negatively affected by increased childhood poverty caused by family fragmentation," Ben Scafidi, the lead researcher and an economics professor at Georgia College & State University, said. ... It used to be that natural calamities were relatively rare occurrences, we now see deadly and super destructive natural phenomena strike almost daily somewhere in the United States and the areas of destruction are more widely spread. American Media's Discrimination. Remember Roseanne Barr, the foul-mouthed, shock comic of the 80s? Well, she’s found work on liberal talk radio network Air America, and suggested that leftists should ignite riots at the Democratic convention in Denver to "resist a two-party system that allows imperialism and racism to continue unrestrained." Following her April 28 rant, only Fox News Channel and the local Denver media thought it newsworthy. None of the other major outlets gave it a glance... Abstinence programs reaffirmed through research. New research has surfaced reaffirming that programs that promote sexual abstinence during the teenage years are beneficial to young people. Proponents of comprehensive sex education on Capitol Hill are seeking to eliminate the funding for both the Community Based Abstinence Program and the Title V abstinence state grant program. But researchers Christine Kim and Robert Rector of The Heritage Foundation have unveiled a comprehensive review of 21 prior studies of the effectiveness of abstinence and virginity pledge programs. They found that 16 of the 21 studies reported positive findings. According to Kim, at stake is a message that many parents would agree with -- and that is the important message that abstinence is clearly a healthy and responsible lifestyle for teens. ... Stop Human Trafficking Now! For example, consider these words: "According to the U.S. intelligence community, of the estimated 800,000 people trafficked across international borders annually, 80 percent of victims are female, and up to 50 percent are minors. Hundreds of thousands of these women and children are used in prostitution each year. U.S. policy draws a direct connection between prostitution and human trafficking." The math cited above suggests that 640,000 women and young girls are trapped in this horror each year, more than 1,700 every single day. Perhaps half of that number is composed of children and teenagers who are robbed of their freedom, dignity, and most precious, the most intimate of human rights. ... Is Jeremiah Wright Right? "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme." -Rev. Jeremiah Wright, 2003. Jeremiah Wright is right. I do not mean I agree with every fact asserted by Mr. Wright, though most of his assertions are incontrovertible historical facts. I don't even mean that I agree with every moral valuation assigned by Mr. Wright. But Wright is right when he weighs our country, the United States of America, on the scales of justice and finds us wanting. Wright is right to employ the most forceful moral language available to describe our culpability. He is right to speak dramatically in his appeal for divine action in response to America's history of slavery, Jim Crow legislation, deeply embedded social evil and ignoble military actions. ... Women and Children First. The natural instinct of civilized human beings is to protect those who are more vulnerable in the face of danger. They treat women as chattel and they abuse children. If the United States continues on its current path of aggressive, preemptive war, incessant nation-building, empire-building, and globalism, our country will collapse. After researching this problem and seeing Brandon's struggle, we have discovered that sexual addiction is a more powerful force than the strongest known drug, releasing endorphins many times stronger than morphine. The younger they are when they see pornography and the longer they are exposed to it, the more imbedded it becomes. Eventually, even when an addict is not looking at pornography, the images continue replaying in his or her mind. ... Full story: http://www.christianitytoday.com/tc/2005/005/13.30.html
The Drug-Court Judge's Wife. “I cannot live with a man who sentences people to twenty years in prison for smoking a marijuana cigarette, people who might need that cigarette to treat their nausea from cancer chemotherapy. There are thousands of cancer patients in excruciating pain because chemotherapy makes them violently nauseous, and marijuana is the only thing that can stop the nausea. Yet the law stops them from using marijuana. I cannot live with a man who’s decisions condemn cancer victims to excruciating pain, or to die drowning from their own vomit. The Bush Administration's Position on Waterboarding is All Wet. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who turned against Mukasey's confirmation over this issue, put it, "No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture." Federal law defines torture as an act "specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering." It defines "severe mental pain or suffering" as "the prolonged mental harm" caused by, among other things, "the intentional infliction or threatened infliction of severe physical pain or suffering" or "the threat of imminent death." ... Education Is Not the Answer to Every Problem. There are, of course, links between education and professional success, between education and the ability to read and write. And obviously we need well-educated people in order to be able to compete with other countries. But for at least the few generations in the Western world there has been no link between higher education and human decency. Period. This is one of the many myths believed by the educated in Western society (people are born good is another). But there is not a shred of evidence to support it. ... After teen suicides, an Argentine tribe outlaws 'white' vices. The village is in the midst of a quarantine called for by the cacique, or traditional leader, after two teens shocked the community by committing suicide in September. All members now must be home by 7 p.m., alcohol is strictly forbidden, and all youths must attend traditional dance classes and consultations with elders. The cacique, Silvino Moreira, says that the white culture that surrounds the village on all sides has encroached on their Guarani culture and that they must protect themselves from all its many "vices," including alcohol, drugs, and even the radio. It's an issue indigenous groups worldwide have faced for centuries, but the unusually drastic measures Mr. Moreira has enacted are key to preserving their culture in today's world, say community members here. ... Law Enforcement Corrupting Influence of Drug Prohibition. In 2006, a case in Atlanta demonstrated the most pervasive form of corruption; lying under oath and falsifying a police report. Three narcs swore to a judge they had positive information about a dope house and obtained a ‘no knock’ warrant. As they pounded on the door, the 92 year old grandmother fired a shot in the air to warn the intruders she was armed. Upon entry, they shot her full of holes. Realizing their mistake, they planted marijuana in the house. Their house of cards came apart. Two have already pled guilty to murder and home invasion. They lied on the search warrant and then used their police report to justify the completely bogus operation. ... Full story: http://www.newswithviews.com/Wooldridge/frosty307.htm
The Victims of Porn. A teenage girl was recalling what her childhood had been like—a childhood marred by porn. “When I was eight years old,” she wrote, “my father made me look at [pornographic] pictures” involving sex acts he wanted her to perform. “I went along with him, not knowing any better,” she said. For years this girl’s father raped her while using these pictures—and at age 16, she had a sexually transmitted disease. “I may die of this disease,” she wrote sadly. “Pornography has ruined my life.” So much for the claim—often made by porn advocates—that pornography is a victimless crime. Vast Differences Between Males & Females. Recently, I wrote that the worst disaster we have suffered in this country – worse than Nine Eleven, worse than the invasion of our country from Mexico, worse even than el presidente Jorge W. Boosh – is the horror of feminism. The other things we can recover from, however serious they are, but feminism strikes at the heart of what we are. ... Remember that we are talking about the version of feminism that erupted in the last half of the Twentieth Century, at about the same time as the latest extrusion of organized sodomy. ... The basic principle of “modern” feminism appears to be that men and women are the same, that any observable differences are superficial and unimportant – ... Some experts have even proposed “unisex” bathrooms. Der Arnold, the Governator, has signed legislation to that effect in Kahleeforneeya, where girls and boys will soon shower together. Such fun! ... Today’s Hidden Slave Trade. In prior eras, the slave trade was conducted openly, with ads prominently posted and the slaves paraded and inspected like animals, often at public auctions. Today’s sex traffickers, the heirs to that tradition, try to keep their activities hidden, although the rest of the sex trade, the sale of the women’s services, is advertised on a scale that can only be characterized as colossal. As a society, we’re repelled by the slavery of old. But the wholesale transport of women and girls across international borders and around the U.S. — to serve as prostitutes under conditions that in most cases are coercive at best — stirs very little outrage. A Dangerous Precedent Abuilding in California. There is terrible news from California. On October 12, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law three bills which, the opposition argues, introduce the radical homosexual agenda into educational institutions. Unquestionably the traditional purpose of public education is to teach reading, writing, mathematics and other fundamentals necessary for well-rounded intellectual development. Instead, these institutions apparently will become miniature laboratories for redefining nature, implementing “gender theory” and experimenting with the effects of sexual lifestyles. ... Married Today, Gone Tomorrow. If you married before 1950, the chances are your marriage lasted at least 15 years, probably 25 and likely even longer. If you married after 1980, however, your prospects are not as rosy. In fact, you are less likely than at any time since World War II to celebrate a Silver wedding anniversary — 25 years of marriage. Current Medical Euthanasia and Eugenic Abortion Practices Echo Nazi Past.
