Obama receives illegal funds from 'terrorist hotbed.'  According to Federal Election Commission filings, Barack Obama has received illegal donations from Palestinians living in Gaza, a hotbed of Hamas terrorists. Obama received more than $24,000 in campaign contributions over a period of two months last fall from three Palestinian brothers from the "Edwan" family in Rafah, Gaza, which is a Hamas stronghold along the border with Egypt. Obama's Trip Backfires; McCain Surges to 4-Point Lead in USA Today/Gallup Poll. A surprising poll released Monday confirms Sen. Barack Obama's worst nightmare: he actually lost ground to Sen. John McCain after a global trip meant to buck up his sagging credentials in foreign and military policy. The USA Today/Gallup poll has McCain leading Obama by four points, 49 percent to Obama's 45 percent, among likely voters. Squeezing Oil From a Stone. The nation's frantic search for crude-oil sources is leading to one of the oldest, richest and most-elusive prizes in the petroleum industry: oil shale. By some estimates, U.S. oil-shale reserves could yield 800 billion barrels of oil, triple the current proven reserves of Saudi Arabia. But tapping that potential requires heating rocks buried deep beneath the earth to hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit. The UN Is Communist? The UN was founded at the San Francisco Conference in 1945, as the war was coming to an end.  The Secretary-General at the UN conference was a distinguished gentleman names Alger Hiss, movie star-handsome, endlessly efficient and consummately charming.  Hiss helped draft the UN Charter. While the Obama seal does include the American bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, the resemblance ends there. Press reports translate the Latin words as "Truly, we are able" � a rough translation of the Obama campaign slogan, "Yes we can." Israel Will Strike Iran if Obama is Elected. Calif. firefighters battle more than 1,400 blazes. SAN FRANCISCO - More than a thousand wildfires - including a massive, stubborn blaze in the Big Sur region - were burning early Monday in Northern California and there was no relief in sight for weary firefighters. Fire crews inched closer to getting some of the largest of 1,420 blazes surrounded, according to the state Office of Emergency Services. Some 364,600 acres - or almost 570 square miles - have burned. The fires burning now were mostly sparked by lightning storms that were unusually intense for so early in the season. Supreme Court decision favors terror suspects. WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts. (View video report) The justices handed the Bush administration its third setback at the high court since 2004 over its treatment of prisoners who are being held indefinitely and without charges at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The vote was 5-4, with the court's liberal justices in the majority. Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the court, said, "The laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times." It was not immediately clear whether this ruling, unlike the first two, would lead to prompt hearings for the detainees, some of whom have been held more than six years. America's Medicated Army. Seven months after Sergeant Christopher LeJeune started scouting Baghdad's dangerous roads,  acting as bait to lure insurgents into the open so his Army unit could kill them, he found himself growing increasingly despondent. "We'd been doing some heavy missions, and things were starting to bother me," LeJeune says. His unit had been protecting Iraqi police stations targeted by rocket-propelled grenades, hunting down mortars hidden in dark Baghdad basements and cleaning up its own messes. He recalls the order his unit got after a nighttime firefight to roll back out and collect the enemy dead. $4 Gas? It's Our Fault. In 1991, Sen. Richard Bryan (D) of Nevada urged Congress to mandate more-efficient cars and trucks. He called it a matter of national security. Senator Bryan's bill would have required that gas mileage rise to approximately 34 mpg in 1996, and 40 mpg in 2001. But Congress sat on its hands. Not until last year, with gas prices again soaring, did it mandate 35 mpg by 2020. It was too little and too late for this crisis. Instead, the actual gas mileage of cars and light trucks produced last year was only 20.2 mpg � worse than it was in 1987. The Environmental Protection Agency says that in 2006, vehicles sold in America were the heaviest, fastest, and most powerful of any since it began collecting data. India Blames the U.S. for the Food Shortage. No More Debates Before Next Primary. Barack Obama, in his first appearance on "FOX News Sunday," says there will be no more debates before the two May 6 primaries despite repeated challenges from Hillary Clinton to meet him face-to-face. Alaska governor returns to work 3 days after giving birth. Gov. Sarah Palin worked briefly Monday, just three days after giving birth to her fifth child, a boy who the governor's spokeswoman confirmed has Down syndrome. Remembering Benazir. Thursday's tragic assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan who returned to her country two months ago, is a staggering loss. Worldwide, Christians who are passionate about reaching Muslims should mourn her murder. My own heart is heavy, as a great woman and honest friend has been taken away. I knew Benazir personally, having debated her at the Oxford Union a few years ago.
